asbestos in older homes

There is a new rule regarding asbestos.  Before a building permit can be issued, Municipalities are now required to ask homeowners to have a survey conducted to establish the possible presence of asbestos in certain materials of an older home (built before 1990).  These materials may be disturbed during construction, and it is important to be able to protect the homeowner, as well as construction workers, from exposure to hazardous materials.  Some of these materials may be:

• asbestos (found in roof tiles, stucco, plaster & drywall)

• lead (found in paint)

• PCB & Mercury (found in fluorescent lighting)

Work Safe BC has issued a guideline for asbestos removal.  North West Environmental Group is a respected company that can provide you with this service.  Usually 8-10 samples will be taken and analyzed.  Their report and a plan for the safe disposal will be submitted to the Municipality.
